The production designer is one of the key creative positions for such productions and, in close collaboration with the producer, director and director of photography, the production designer will help define the style and setting in which the story is to be told. The production designer helps establish both the aesthetic needs and visual feel of a given production, and guides other departments in unifying this aesthetic. As a HOD, the production designer is also responsible for offering viable ways of making films within a specific time period and budget. This is achieved through carefully calculated scheduling which is an ongoing process throughout production. There is a great deal of imagination that goes into producing an appropriate backdrop to a production and is a vital element in making a film evocative or convincing, and also drawing an audience into the story.
